Petersham Historical Society
"Woodturners of Petersham" on exhibit at Historical Society
The beautiful handcrafted woodwork of long ago Petersham resident Germain Legare
is currently on exhibit at the Petersham Historical Society. Legare, 1830-1910,
was known as a fine craftsman and sold his work locally and beyond. Legare
served in the Civil War and was a prisoner at the infamous Andersonville Prison
where he began his first small efforts at woodwork.
The Legare family continues on in Petersham now into the fifth generation with
Germain's great grandson, Denis Legare, serving as Police Chief since 1985.
Along with Legare's work, the exhibit includes a small selection of pieces by
his contemporaries. The Society is also delighted to exhibit the work of current
Petersham woodworker Jon Sammis.
The Historical Society is located on Petersham Common at 10 North Main Street
and open on Sundays through the fall from 1 to 5 pm.
